I encourage my fellow gardening buddies to use my truck and load it up with compost. I've probably hauled about 10 cubic yards of Miramar compost and will help out any local gardener if they need a lot of dirt for cheap. Anyway, this past weekend my roommate Jeff and I hauled another full truck load.

We had a lot of compost and not enough empty boxes to fill. I put some aside in a plastic tote which will be used later but we still had a bed full of compost. The common practice when applying new soil is to remove the mulch, add compost, and then re-apply the mulch. The problem with this method is that it is time consuming. Considering the number of planter boxes and plastic containers in my backyard it might have taken 12 hours to unload, remove mulch, apply compost and finally re-apply mulch. Meanwhile my truck is also tied up all day since it can't be unloaded.

We decided to just throw the compost on top of the mulch. We had so much that there are mounds on certain plants and pockets in the backyard. I said to Jeff that my containers now are like a hamburger. There are layers. I have a bun of compost on top, a burger layer of mulch, and finally a large bottom bun of soil. I'm conflicted about the hamburger approach to gardening. The roots cannot grow in the wood mulch unless they find soil. The compost top bun should leak through to the mulch eventually but in the meantime, there effectively is no mulch. Weeds or other stuff can grow in the top layer. I guess it isn't a big deal since it will eventually \"melt away\" into the dirt. The more compost the better but I also am a huge advocate of mulch. I'm so conflicted!

I'm interested to see what happens. Does anybody have any experience in hamburger gardening or predictions about how my setup will end up? ","slug":"hamburger-gardening","wistia":{"id":""},"wistiaAudio":{"id":""},"youtube":{"id":""},"headerTitle":null,"headerCaption":{"color":"#000000","html":""},"tweet":{"id":""},"at":"2016-05-17T01:07:13.200Z","owner":{"id":"54d18896cc4a0d4b530e118b","name":"ahopkins"},"feed":{"id":"573a6ec195a9285015eda878","at":"2016-05-17T01:07:13.200Z"},"id":"573a6ec195a9285015eda877"},{"groups":["public"],"title":"First post","seq":1,"msg":"Note to self - I need to start blogging about my gardening experience. ","slug":"first-post","wistia":{"id":""},"wistiaAudio":{"id":""},"youtube":{"id":""},"headerTitle":null,"headerCaption":{"color":"#000000","html":""},"tweet":{"id":""},"at":"2015-03-06T10:50:04.309Z","owner":{"id":"54d18896cc4a0d4b530e118b","name":"ahopkins"},"feed":{"id":"54f9865c9186622511ebcd6b","at":"2015-03-06T10:50:04.309Z"},"id":"54f9865c9186622511ebcd6a"}]
